Blanchland - Pennypie House - Baybridge - Blanchland Walk.

This circular walk of about 3.5 miles from the picturesque village of Blanchland takes in scenery ranging from country lanes to moorland and riverside footpaths.

It can be done in either direction but north of Baybridge is a very steep section of road which you will be going up if you walk in the opposite direction to us.

You could also start the walk from Baybridge if you wish.

Walk

Park in the car park on the north side of Blanchland Village (or Baybridge if starting from there).

Toilets are located beside the bridge over the river at the south end of the Blanchland Village, if you need them before you leave.

Turn left out of the car park and walk along the tarmac road to Shildon.

At Shildon the tarmac road turns into a track as you continue along the side of Pennypie Fell.

On the left are remains of some of the mining activities in this area.

Continue along this track until you reach Pennypie House. Apparently it gains the name as pies were baked here and sold to miners for a penny (old money!) each.

Follow the track past Pennypie House and turn left along the track which is signposted to Baybridge.

This track makes its way across open moorland and was boggy after very heavy rain in the days before we did this walk

A few detours around the large pools may be needed so waterproof boots are a must here

There are great views in both directions across the moors on this section of the walk.

As you get nearer to Baybridge the track turns back to tarmac and affords fine views across the valley.

This road drops steeply down into the valley to Baybridge.

Baybridge is at the Border between Northumberland and Durham. There is a picnic area beside the river here.

Immediately before the bridge over the River Derwent a footpath turns off to the left.

Follow this path which runs along the north bank of the River Derwent back to Blanchland.

Alternatively there is also a path along the south bank of the river.

When you reach the bridge at Blanchland (toilets) turn left and walk back up through the village to the car park.

Notes

Good walking boots are advised for this walk and the weather can change quickly here so a waterproof is advisable too.
